Janusz Piekalkiewicz 11152
The Air War, 1939-1945
Blandford Press, 1985. Gekartonneerd met stofomslag. Pp: 434. THE AIR WAR 1939-45 is a chronological account of the air conflict day by day from all perspectives. Its text is mainly documentary accounts from sources as diverse as the Allied and Axis high commands, press reports from neutral countries, official reports and propaganda documents: these give both the immediacy of contemporary reporting and a broad spectrum of fact and opinion. Every warfront is covered, not only the well-known ones but also such minor theatres as Somaliland and Madagascar. There are over 400 photographs, many of them previously unpublished, and numerous line drawings and maps. For the first time there appears in one volume an appendix of the structure and organisation of the air forces of all 30 combatant nations, plus a chronological list of all major air attacks on Germany. Janusz Piekalkiewicz fought with the Polish underground during the War and with the Hungarian freedom fighters in 1956, and is now an author and broadcaster, widely respected for his indefatigable research in the documentary history of World War 2. Norman Friedman 24850
Fighters Over the Fleet. Naval Air Defence from Biplanes to the Cold War
Seaforth Publishing, 2016. Gekartonneerd met stofomslag. Pp: 460. This is an account of the evolution of naval fighters for fleet air defence and the parallel evolution of the ships operating and controlling them, concentrating on the three main exponents of carrier warfare, the Royal Navy, the US Navy, and the Imperial Japanese Navy. It describes the earliest efforts from the 1920s but it was not until radar allowed the direction of fighters that organised air defence became possible. Thus major naval-air battles of the Second World War - like Midway, the 'Pedestal' convoy, the Philippine Sea and Okinawa - are portrayed as tests of the new technology. This was ultimately found wanting by the Kamikaze campaigns, which led to postwar moves towards computer control and new kinds of fighters. After 1945 the novel threats of nuclear weapons and stand-off missiles compounded the difficulties of naval air defence and the second half of the book covers RN and USN attempts to solve these problems, looking at US experience in Vietnam and British operations in the Falklands War.It concludes with the ultimate US development of techniques and technology to fight the Outer Air Battle in the 1980s, which in turn point to the current state of carrier fighters and the supporting technology. Based largely on documentary sources, some previously unused, this book will appeal to both the naval and aviation communities. ISBN: 9781848324046. Cond./Kwaliteit: Goed.

9780029153512 Thomas Alexander Hughes 279929, Over Lord. General Pete Quesada and the Triumph of Tactical Air Power in World War II
Thomas Alexander Hughes 279929
Over Lord. General Pete Quesada and the Triumph of Tactical Air Power in World War II
Free Press, 1995. Gekartonneerd met stofomslag. Pp: 380. Overlord is the story of how American tactical air power was developed by General Elwood "Pete" Quesada during World War II, including its decisive role in Operation Overlord and the liberation of Europe. Pete Quesada is one of World War II's unsung yet crucial heroes. With his famous "Ninth Tactical Air Command," Quesada established the best air-ground team in the European theater. He pioneered the use of radar in close air support operations, introducing weapons systems specifically geared to tactical operations. He nurtured new flying methods designed for the kind of precision bombing the battlefields of Europe demanded. And more than anything else, Pete Quesada championed efforts to mold air and ground officers into a single fighting unit. This is the definitive story of an extraordinary man, whose remarkable efforts to aid foot soldiers in World War II, contributed significantly to the Allies' success. America's belated rediscovery of Quesada's precepts some forty years later in conflicts like Operation Desert Storm only underscores the importance of Quesada's story. ISBN: 9780029153512.
